26 Foot Tall Statue of Marilyn Monroe Unveiled in Chicago -

In Chicago's Pioneer Court, there was 26ft (8 m) tall statue of Marilyn Monroe. The author captures the composition her iconic 'wind from the subway' pose, the most famous scene from the movie 'Seven years of Desire', after which the Hollywood actress became known as the $ex symbol of the era.

As in the film, Chicago is on the Monroe metro ventilation lattice, and her dress as if fanning the air flow. Residents joke that now they have the opportunity to look under the dress of the famous actress. The sculpture will stand in Chicago until the spring of 2012.

Many in the crowd that descended on the plaza throughout the day - including a tuxedo-clad wedding party - wasted little time positioning themselves under the movie star’s dress to catch a subway-level view and take pictures with their cellphone cameras. Not that Monroe, her eyes closed and a sublime smile on her face, seemed to notice.

Some of those who took pictures of the sculpture called 'Forever Marilyn' were surprised when they came around the side and back of the sculpture and saw honest-to-goodness lace panties on the movie icon. The film scene and photographs taken from it left much more to the imagination than artist Seward Johnson’s sculpture.

A source tells, “At a time when producers were clamouring to sign Salman in action films, he chose to do a full-on family film, his first since Sooraj’s Hum Saath Saath Hain in 1999 because the script and characters of Ready reminded him of Sooraj’s joint-family films. Salman told the director Anees Bazmi that he wanted to make Sooraj proud.”

Now the superstar Salman wants the super-director Sooraj of the most successful family film of all times to view Ready, which among friends, Salman describes as a tribute to Sooraj Barjatya.

Bazmi says, “It’s true Ready is a modern rendition of Hum Aapke Hain Koun. Sooraj-ji is one of my all-time favourite directors. I’ve to confess I went to Salman with the subject of Ready in the hope that I could recreate some of the magic of Sooraj-ji's cinema. Salman immediately caught on. Like Sooraj-ji’s films, Ready is about a large joint-family with characters constantly bustling in and out of the household. The only difference is that the times have changed. Everyone in Sooraj-ji’s cinema was kind and well-meaning and well-fed. The people in the joint-family in Ready reflect the morality and diet of our times.”

Bazmi admits a screening of Ready for Sooraj is on the cards. “Sooraj-ji will recognize the same masoomiyat (innocence) and sharaarat in Salman in Ready that we saw in Hum Aapke Hain Kaun and Hum Saath Saath Hain. My film is a very small homage to Sooraj’s family values. As soon as we’re ready with Ready we’d like to screen our film for Soorajji.”

Suggestions on how to improve the product are also welcome from Sooraj.

Salman, who has lately been hanging out with an entirely new coterie of friends, misses those quaint uncomplicated days of Sooraj’s cinema.

Floating Village of Kompong Phluk And Reversing Mekong River of Cambodia

Kampong Phluk is a cluster of three villages of stilted houses built within the floodplain of the Tonle Sap lake, about 16 km southeast of Siem Reap, Cambodia. Flooded mangrove forest surrounds the area and is home to a variety of wildlife including crab-eating macaques, and 3000 human inhabitants.

The houses of Kompong Phluk are built on top of wooden poles and stilts between six and eight meters high and tower over the boats moored along the river, which snakes through the village before heading out into the Tonle Sap lake. During the dry season when the lake is low, the buildings in the villages seem to soar atop their 6-meter stilts exposed by the lack of water. At this time of year many of the villagers move out onto the lake and build temporary houses. In the wet season when water level rises, the villagers move back to their permanent houses on the floodplain, the stilts now hidden under the water.

Tonle Sap Lake, upon which the village of Kampong Phluk floats, exhibits a unique hydrologic phenomenon during the wet season - the river reverses direction, filling the lake instead of draining it. The engine of this phenomenon is the Mekong River, which becomes bloated with snow melt and runoff from the monsoon rains in the wet season. The swollen Mekong backs up into the Tonle Sap River expanding the surface area of lake more than five-fold, inundating the surrounding forested floodplain and supporting an extraordinarily rich and diverse eco-system.

In the wet season, the Tonle Sap Lake is one of the largest freshwater lakes in Asia, swelling to an expansive 12,000 square km. More than 100 varieties of waterbirds including several threatened and endangered species, over 200 species of fish, as well as crocodiles, turtles, macaques, otter and other wildlife inhabit the inundated mangrove forests. The Lake is also an important commercial resource, providing more than half of the fish consumed in Cambodia.

During the dry half of the year the Lake shrinks to as small as 2500 square km, draining into the Tonle Sap River, which meanders southeast, eventually merging with the Mekong River.
